  1. Will, I don’t get the comparison! If you don’t breathe, YOU DIE. If you don’t have kids, you… what? Have a nice time?

  2. The point is that “all else equal” doesn’t seem to apply to this analysis. Having kids is too related to a bunch of other stuff that makes us happy (i.e. Haidt’s work on conservative virtues and happiness).

    I suppose you could attempt to excise this norm from the conservative package (and maybe some others you don’t like) and maintain happiness, but I don’t think we know enough about the structure of norms to make it a clean cut.
