The jokes at the beginning aside, I thought Haidt’s breakdown of moral channels was pretty even-handed.
Horgan and Johnson seemed to miss something in their critique, confusing the American left and right movements with universal liberal and conservative tendencies.
I suspect that cultures developed in harsh conditions tend to be more conservative, while cultures developed in easy conditions tend to be more liberal. Like, it takes a certain amount of surplus wealth (material or other) to support tolerance, disorder, and experimentation, while being able to survive the next winter.
